We’ve got a really good feeling about the latest Lucasfilm release, Solo: A Star Wars Story, which hits theaters nationwide next week, and is the latest ambitious project from Disney’s new creativity behind the Star Wars franchise. Solo has undoubtedly gone through many changes before arriving at its finished product, which debuts next week, but its final product is something we’re overly excited for, and an exciting leap for fans to look forward to. Therefore, we’re taking a look at five of those things we can’t wait to see.
Ron Howard’s Stylistic Addition to Star Wars
The legendary Ron Howard has directed some of the most phenomenal movies, including Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Frost/Nixon, and that cult classic Disney film, Splash. His ability to create excitement and gripping tension makes him such a great fit to helm a Star Wars film. Surprisingly, we have little indication of what a Ron Howard-directed film might look like, aside from a few brief trailers, and so we’re most thrilled to see how the stylistic blend of both this phenomenal franchise and this talented director will result.
A New Spin on an Old Story
Perhaps what is most exciting about Solo is that it brings a whole new exciting perspective to the origin story of Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, and Chewbacca, as well as others. These characters have existed since Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back graced the silver screen in 1977 and 1980, but it’s exciting to find new ways to retell the stories of these characters, and we’re thrilled to find out what new things we may uncover when we do.
Visual Aesthetics, Re-Envisioned
One of my favorite elements of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, aside from its phenomenal story, gripping action and spectacular performances, was its ability to create an environment that seamlessly blended the world of Rogue One with the world and technology seen in the original Star Wars. It’s exciting to imagine in what ways the crew can find new fresh stories to see and tell, while also blending in that aesthetic that has defined the Star Wars universe for a generation.
New Debuts on Old Characters
Not only is Solo: A Star Wars Story an opportunity to delve into the backgrounds of the characters from a new perspective, it is also the first time several characters are being portrayed by new actors. The iconic role of Han Solo, one forever filled by the equally iconic Harrison Ford, is being taken on by Alden Ehrenreich and we’re excited to see what he just might be able to do with it, and how he can re-envision one of the most recognizable characters ever to grace the silver screen.
Another Expansive Story in the Star Wars Universe
Above all else, the Star Wars universe is known for rich, expansive storytelling, and its filled to the brim with substories that deeply develop its characters, locations, and themes in new ways. Like Rogue One and Star Wars Rebels, we hope that this provides us the opportunity to learn about new things about the Star Wars universe like we have never seen before, and we can’t wait to see where the journey may take us from there.
Solo: A Star Wars Story blasts into theaters on May 25th, 2018.
