As an annual tradition, Disneynature always announces their new films in time for Earth Day, and this year was no exception. The studio took to social media to announce their latest film, titled Dolphin Reef, which unlike their theatrical titles, will head directly to Disney+ on November 12th, 2019. Disney+ is the upcoming streaming service being launched by The Walt Disney Company and will feature a long list of original content from each division of the company, from Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and beyond.
Dolphin Reef will be narrated by actress Natalie Portman, and like many Disneynature movies, including Penguins– which is in theaters now, the story will follow Echo, a young Pacific bottlenose dolphin in her struggle to navigate her newfound responsibilities of growing up. “Disneynature takes audiences to spectacular and remote places to share remarkable wildlife stories captured by our award-winning film crews,” says Paul Baribault, vice president of Disneynature. “Dolphin Reef’ takes us to a thriving coral reef—one of the most fascinating and dynamic habitats on Earth—to see the incredible creatures who consider reefs their home.”
Some fans will remember that this is not the first time Disneynature sought to bring a story about dolphins to life, including last year’s canceled Dolphins movie that mysteriously disappeared from the Walt Disney Studios slate one week before its release. It’s currently unclear if this project will be a re-worked version of that film, which was directed by Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey and narrated by Owen Wilson. That film, however, earned a release in France under the title Blue in early 2018. Other films currently remain in the works at Disneynature, and so it is unclear if these two films will both see a domestic release at any point. Disneynature is known for their ability to tell beautiful stories that push the boundaries of nature filmmaking, continuing a legacy founded by Walt Disney in his True-Life Adventures series that were produced between 1948-1960.
Elsewhere, the Disneynature banner continues to thrive with new spectacular ambitious projects like Penguins, now playing in theaters. Dolphin Reef will debut exclusively on Disney+ along with the service debut on November 12th, 2019.
