Thank you to contributor Deryk Treece for providing us with this informative article!
Deryk Treece- I’m obsessed with ‘Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge’. In fact, it’s taken over my dreams and my thoughts on a regular basis. Currently, I’m a proud Cast Member at Walt Disney World, and I currently work at Alien Swirling Saucers at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and every day I walk right past the entrance to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge on my way to work. If you’re anything like me, then you spend all your free time at home reading every article and watching every video about the new land. I can’t get enough of it. Every picture and every small amount of new information just hypes me up. I’ve read a multitude of content, so I hear a lot of the same stuff; “5 Things to Eat at Galaxy’s Edge,” and, “Top 10 Things We’re Excited for at Galaxy’s Edge” or, “new info about merchandise.” Don’t get me wrong, all of that is good information. Galaxy’s Edge is, after all, a themed land at a theme park. People want to know what they can do.
But I wanted to know the story. I wanted to know the who, what, when, where, and why of Galaxy’s Edge. Immersive storytelling is at the foundation of everything at Walt Disney World, and I wanted to uncover everything there was to know about the backstory behind this immersive land. I found some videos, but none of them were doing it for me. It felt like part of the story was missing ahead of its release and I wanted to know more.
This last weekend I was writing my cover letter and resume to apply to be a citizen of Batuu. Batuu is the planet that Galaxy’s Edge takes place at. Not only am I obsessed as a fan, but I want to be on the opening team more than anything. As I was writing my cover letter, I kept trying to incorporate a way to show how much I know about Galaxy’s Edge and Star Wars in general. I can talk the talk all day, but I needed to show that I can walk the walk too. This video is the cultivation of all that research. I scoured the web and every inch of Star Wars lore in search for every reference that ties into the planet of Batuu. I learned a lot and pulled it into one near 28-minute video for all of you to enjoy and prepare for when ‘Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge’ opens this year.
Here are some quick, brief highlights of the story of Batuu:
Batuu is an Outpost Planet on the Edge of the Galaxy
Batuu is located on the very end of the outer rim, nearby planets including Tatooine, Hoth, and Bespin, and of course, Galaxy’s Edge is in direct reference to its geographical location in the Star Wars universe…at the edge of the galaxy. Batuu is a remote outpost today that the Resistance has taken up refuge within, as it remains a planet forgotten by time. Being millions of years old, Batuu was once a famous trading outpost in the time before hyperspace was invented and made popular, and its easy transport caused the small, once-popular areas like the main village, Black Spire Outpost, fade from memory. This, of course, makes it the perfect rebel base taken up by the Resistance to seek refuge from the First Order.
‘Galaxy’s Edge’ is Up-to-Date with Present Star Wars Canon
At the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, (slight spoilers ahead, obviously) we see our heroes, Poe Dameron, Rey, Finn, and a slew of Resistance fighters heading flying off into hyperspace aboard the Millenium Falcon. While the movie cuts to the credits before we can see exactly where they’re heading, but extensive research has allowed us to know exactly where they’re going, and that of course is Batuu. Here, the Resistance set up base in an effort to hide from the threatening First Order, now led by the unstable Supreme Leader Kylo Ren. To recap: Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge takes place exactly where we are in the Star Wars universe right now, immediately after The Last Jedi but presumably before Episode IX. What this means for future movies and its role on the story on-screen and beyond, we still don’t know.
Everything That Happens at ‘Galaxy’s Edge’ is in Canon, and the Attractions Have an Immersive Story
As expanded in the video, the plot behind attractions at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is deeply rooted within Star Wars lore, including Smuggler’s Run, opening this year. Thanks to the book, Pirate’s Price, we have an idea of the attraction’s backstory, that sees the infamous smuggler Hondo, using the Millenium Falcon as a bargaining piece in an effort to gain a profit, only to steal it back in order to recruit members for a flight crew for a job he is about to undertake. This, of course, is where you come into the story, joining Hondo’s crew aboard the Millenium Falcon in a massive effort to smuggle valuable properties across the galaxy. Remember, what occurs throughout Galaxy’s Edge is canon and Walt Disney Imagineering has out you right at the center of it all.
As you can tell, ‘Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge’ is an amazing step forward in theme park storytelling and the start of an amazing chapter for Star Wars fans of all ages. We can’t wait for all guests to have the opportunity to explore everything this immersive land has to offer and truly be a part of Star Wars history.
Galaxy’s Edge is set to open May 31st at Disneyland and August 29th at Walt Disney World. Hope to see you there, Travelers!
