Pixar’s brand new online experimental series, SparkShorts, launched online today with its first short-film, Purl, debuting for free on YouTube. While the first several SparkShorts installments will debut on YouTube in the coming weeks, the series will later move with new short films to the upcoming Disney digital streaming service, Disney+. The new SparkShorts is completely independent from the Disney-Pixar Short Films or even the theatrical films, but rather an independent series of shorts created by artists and filmmakers at Pixar. This series allows various artists to express ideas and experiment concepts and artistic designs that don’t have the burden of being tied to a big-budget animated feature.
Purl is directed by Kristen Lester, a story artist at Pixar Animation Studios, and explores a complex topic, and one that hopes to inspire change. The full short is available to watch now, and the following SparkShorts will be released each Monday.
What are your thoughts on the first ‘SparkShorts’ film? Are you excited for future short films?
