Fan Expo Preview: Toronto’s Fan Event is Full of Disney, Marvel, Star Wars Fun

In our efforts to keep up with Disney fan events from around the world, our pal Nick Moreau takes look at the upcoming Toronto Fan Expo Canada, and the exciting things Disney fans can expect from this weekend’s event. Look for Nick’s coverage this weekend! 

Nick Moreau- Toronto event Fan Expo Canada is no D23 for Disney fans, but there’s always Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars-related programming on tap. Chief among them are panels by Robbie Benson, Paige O’Hara, Kathleen Turner, and the premiere screening of the fourth season opener of Star Wars Rebels.

Fan Expo Canada 2017 runs from the evening of Thursday, August 31 to Sunday, September 3 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Schedules are not yet officially finalized, so any programming could change.

Force Friday II Presentation Thursday at 7:00 pm, in Room 701B

In 2015, Disney and Lucasfilm held “Force Friday”, where a variety of Star Wars products were released without preview. For Force Friday II, Fan Expo Canada attendees can get an exclusive preview of the “toys, collectibles, apparel, books, and more” that will be available a few hours later.

Spotlight on Voice Actor Stars Maurice LaMarche & Charlie Adler

Friday at 11:30 am, in Room 206

Though best known for productions by other companies, LaMarche’s roles include the King of Arendale in Frozen and Scuttle on The Little Mermaid television series, and Adler has voice directed The Replacements and The Buzz on Maggie, and cast the voices for Phineas and Ferb.

Friday at 1:00 pm, in Room 102

Jessica Rabbit takes the venue’s biggest stage to talk about her career.

Organized by a cosplayer as opposed to Fan Expo Canada itself, the Facebook event listing for this meetup so far has 40 people indicating they intend to attend. The time will be determined a little closer to the convention, as schedules finalize.

His many roles include Centipede in James and the Giant Peach and Fagan in Disney’s Oliver Twist.

Voice Actor Script Reading of The Princess Bride

Saturday at 11:00 am, in room 106

Disney Theatricals’ adaptation of the film seems to have fallen dormant, so this might be your only chance to see it on a stage.

Star Wars Rebels Premiere Screening

Saturday at 11:30 am, in room 102

The world premiere of television series Star Wars Rebels, entering its fourth and final season, screens at Fan Expo. The director, and presumably to be announced others, hold a Q&A at 12:15 pm. The series has screened twice before at Fan Expo Canada, including the North American debut of season 3 last year.

Celebrity Q&A with Stars of Beauty and the Beast Paige O’Hara and Robbie Benson

Sunday at 11:30 am, in room 102

Both Paige O’Hara and Robbie Benson are Disney legends in their own right, for their wonderful work on the original animated version of Beauty and the Beast. Luckily for fans, the two are sitting down for a very special Q&A session about their work on the film and with Disney. This is an event likely not to be missed.

Celebrity Q&A with Star Wars Favourite Anthony Daniels

Sunday at 12:30 pm, in room 106

Anthony Daniels still remains the only Star Wars actor who has appeared in every single Star Wars film to date, and he continues to bring one of the most iconic characters of all time to life. Now, hear some of his incredible insight of performing C3PO since the very first film in 1977 in this very special Q&A which is sure to delight many Disney fans.

Disney Connected Guests

Legendary movie poster artist Drew Struzan will attend. His Disney credits include Adventures in Babysitting, Angels in the Outfield, Beauty and the Beast, Hocus Pocus, as well as most of the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Muppets films.

Marvel Comics artists appearing include Adi Granov, Ed McGuinness, and Humberto Ramos. Marvel editor Devin Lewis will be doing portfolio reviews from Friday to Sunday, with all submissions required the day before. (A DC editor is also reviewing portfolios.)

Other guests with Disney connections? They include Barry Bostwick (roles from the father in The Parent Trap III to Tangled: The Series), Tom Cavanagh (1997 Disney Channel film Northern Lights, as well as a recurring role on Doc McStuffins), Nathan Fillon (Monsters University, Cars 3),  Famke Janssen (Disneyland Paris ride Studio Tram Tour: Behind the Magic), Amy Jo Johnston (1996 Disney Channel film Susie Q), Kristen Kreuk (an episode of The Weekenders), and Zachary Levi (Tangled, Tangled: The Series).


The convention will include a #HasbroStore with convention exclusive items previously sold at San Diego Comic Con, including a Daredevil action figure and a Battle for Asgard five-pack. They’re also offering an online contest with a Marvel Prize Pack, featuring autographed items. Hasbro has said its SDCC Star Wars exclusives will also be available. They included a Luke Skywalker and Landspeeder, and Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Fan Expo’s own exclusives include a variant cover for Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #1, a variant cover for Venom #150, and an alternate cover for the hardcover anthology of newspaper comics Star Wars Classics Volume 1. Also available are a Star Wars 40th anniversary t-shirt, a Baby Groot t-shirt, and a Star Wars: The Last Jedi lunchbox. The exclusives were previously offered at Boston Comic Con, which is run by the same ownership.

Janes Family Foods will be on hand to promote their Star Wars-shaped chicken nuggets. LEGO will also have a booth at the event.

There, of course, are dozens of retailers, many of whom will have Disney items for sale.
